Dr. Vines’ research focuses on Cooperative Extension, how it functions and what it needs to succeed.  Karen believes that, in Extension, we must recognize the importance of shared expertise and learning as we partner with communities of interest to define challenges and develop successful and sustainable solutions.  She has done work related to engaged and emerging methods of program delivery in Cooperative Extension.  Of special interest is how to provide Extension educators/agents with professional development experiences that allow them to excel and provide greater sustainability and resiliance to their communities.  She is current serving as the lead in a NIFA funded project to prevent opioid abuse in rural Virginia.  Other projects in which she has been involved are:

  • Engagement through Cooperative Extension: Towards understanding meaning and practice among educators in two state Extension systems (dissertation research) – Findings have been used to develop greater understanding of what engagement means within Cooperative Extension from the agents perspective.  This will be used to provide Extension, higher education and other organizations with tools that may be used to increase engagement.
  • Needs assessment of early career Extension agents in Virginia – The study identified challenges experienced by early career Extension agents.  The team continues to work on implementation of changes to improved job satisfaction and longevity for these agents.
  • National Extension Master Gardener online training - A study to determine need for a national online training in use of social media for Extension Master Gardeners.  Conducted in partnership with eXtension and National Extension Master Gardeners. Karen worked with a team, using the findings to develop an online training for the national organization.

Karen’s program focuses on continuing professional education programs for Extension Agents.  One of the objectives of the NIFA funded project to prevent opioid abuse in rural Virginia is to evaluate the use of a community-based model to improve program outcomes and sustainability. This will contribute to scholarship that can be used in Virginia and nationally to provide training for Extension agents in solving complex community issues. Karen’s dissertation, completed in 2017, focused on the definition and implementation of engaged Extension program delivery at the local level.  Karen completed a needs assessment of early career agents in Virginia Coopeartive Extension in 2014 which has led to numerous changes in the organization.  Karen was actively involved with the Extension Master Gardener Social Media Task Force, determining needs for national social media training opportunities and working to develop programming to meet these needs.  She remains active in evaluating the success of this project.

Karen has been in Extension since 1990.  She served as a county Extension educator in Ag & Natural Resources at Purdue University (Franklin Co, IN), 4-H/Youth Development in Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service (Clay and Caldwell Counties, KY) and Livestock Agent with Virginia Cooperative Extension (Suffolk, VA) from 1990 to 2000.  She served as co-chair of the state Beef Team at Purdue.  In 2000 she accepted the position as Distance Learning Specialist for Beef and Dairy Programs at Purdue.  At Penn State she continued her leadership in development of extension online programs in the department of Animal Science and later the College of Agricultural Sciences.

ALCE 4014: INTRODUCTION TO COOPERATIVE EXTENSION (Fall)
An overview of the Cooperative Extension Service as it applies to non-formal education for citizens and communities.  Major areas discussed include history, organization, functional areas, responsibilities of local agents, employment in extension and educational program planning. (3 Credits).

ALCE 4054: Cooperative Extension Internship (Summer II) Students planning to participate in Extension internships need to secure the internship. Then register for the course and contact Karen (kvines@vt.edu) for access to the online materials that will facilitate communication during the internship.  The internship represents a collaborative, engaged learning experience between the student, supervising agent and the department. (3 Credits).

ALCE 5014: Principles & Methods of Non-formal Teaching and Learning (Summer II, online)  This introductory level graduate course covers principles and methods associated with non-formal teaching and learning for adult, extension, and community based education as well as further settings such as agricultural education.  Major course aims include gaining understanding of concepts and practical knowledge for designing, integrating, and justifying non-formal educational experiences for learners.  Specific attention will be given to learning frameworks and approaches that emphasize the role of participation, facilitation, and other student-centered teaching and learning approaches in agriculture

ALCE 5074, Foundations of Agricultural, Leadership, and Community Education, Fall, 3 credits
